This may very well be the cause of your insomnia. Since you are reading this page, statistically speaking, this is the cause of your insomnia problem.
We live in a day and age where the highly efficient people who can get the most done reap the biggest rewards. Unfortunately, this is probably the leading cause of insomnia.
This is a concept that Dr. Siegfried Haug discusses in his book, I Want to Sleep: Unlearning Insomnia - Treat Yourself to a Good Night.
Dr. Haug shows us that there’s two kinds of thinking, “wired” thinking and “tired” thinking.
Stress and being “wired” during the day causes us to not be able to detach at night. We FEEL tired, but in reality, our brain hasn’t calmed down yet. We can’t tell, but our brain remains in wired mode. It’s not that easy to change the state of your mind.
The problem is invisible, but you have no doubt felt its effects.
The message of this book is profound, and to summarize: You can’t fall asleep when your wired, and the more tired you are, the better you will sleep.
The best thing you can do to get rest is a combination of two things:
-
Change from a “fighting” insomnia or “trying to fall asleep” mindset to a “relaxing, supportive, soothing” mindset. Develop the soothing mindset while going to sleep is essential - the way our mind works is that it focuses around whatever we put our time and effort towards.
- Have a bedtime routine. This should be consistent every night, and you’ll want to spend enough time before bed doing things that bring you into a tired state of mind. Never actively try to go to sleep - instead, focus on enjoying being relaxed and the rest you get from just laying down and being calm.

If you think stress, anxiety, and being too busy in general is hurting your sleep or consuming too much of your life, I highly recommend reading Dr. Haug’s book, I Want to Sleep: Unlearning Insomnia - Treat Yourself to a Good Night.
This book is loaded with mindsets and techniques you can use to get to sleep, and since Dr. Haug is a well-known sleep expert and therapist, you’re basically getting therapy from one of the best experts in the field.
The book reads like a story, and it feels like you have a personal coach there with you, captivating your attention to help you understand the concepts quickly and easily.
I have no doubt that anyone who reads this book will gain a superior understanding of what “wired” things are and what “tired” things are.

The Quick Fix - Change Your State of Mind
There’s a great program called “Sleep Tracks” you can listen to change into a tired state of mind. Well, that’s not entirely true: Sleep Tracks was designed to put you to sleep - not to change your state of mind.
However, if you meditate to Sleep Tracks, it will cause you to enter a tired state of mind.
Being wired and meditation generally don’t mix because meditation demands your focus in a way that is tiring. Meditation takes the power away from wired thinking by changing your focus on all levels.
The more you mediate, the more you’ll be able to train your brain to enter a tired state, and if you meditate by listing to sleep tracks, it will help you become very tired quickly AND put you to sleep simultaneously.
